ADHD Prescribing Policy

Policy Statement:

Westleigh Medical Practice is committed to providing safe, evidence-based care for patients with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). In line with our clinical governance standards and prescribing policies, Westleigh Medical Practice will not prescribe ADHD medications initiated by private clinics nor will it enter into shared care agreements with private providers for ADHD management.

This policy aims to clarify the position of, Westleigh Medical Practice regarding prescribing responsibilities and shared care arrangements for ADHD patients assessed or treated by private clinics.  This policy applies to all healthcare professionals working within Westleigh Medical Practice involved in the care of patients with ADHD.

Clinicians will not prescribe ADHD medication initiated by private clinics. All ADHD medication prescribing within Westleigh Medical Practice must be initiated and managed by NHS clinicians following local NHS clinical guidelines and protocols.

Shared Care Agreements and Transition to NHS Care: Westleigh Medical Practice will not enter into shared care agreements with private clinics for ADHD treatment. Shared care agreements require mutual clinical governance arrangements and clear responsibility for patient monitoring and prescribing, which cannot be guaranteed with private providers outside NHS systems.  Patients assessed or treated privately and seeking NHS support for ADHD must undergo reassessment and diagnosis within NHS England services before initiation or continuation of ADHD medication under NHS prescribing protocols.

This policy ensures patient safety, consistency of care, and adherence to Westleigh Medical Practice’s clinical standards and prescribing governance. It also reflects the NHS’s responsibility for treatment decisions and monitoring within its care pathways
